glycogen synthase

Last reviewed 01/2018

Glycogen synthase is the liver and skeletal muscle enzyme that converts UDP glucose and a glycogen chain of n glucose residues to UDP and glycogen of length n+1 residues. It is a condensation reaction between the 1 and 4 carbon positions.

It is under complex regulation that largely determines the state of either glycogenesis or glycogenolysis; this is described in the submenu.
