Platelets are formed from megakaryocyte cytoplasm within bone marrow. At the periphery of the giant cell, the cytoplasm is divided up by demarcation channels. These form when the local plasma membrane slowly invaginates on either side of a prospective platelet. Eventually, the invaginations fuse to free the platelet into the blood.
