antiviral agents in the immunocompromised

Prophylactic and therapeutic use of acyclovir is effective against herpes simplex and herpes zoster.
Cytomegalovirus however remains difficult to treat though the following agents are used:
- phosphonoformate / foscarnet
- ganciclovir
- hyper-immune CMV globulin
