Early features of congenital syphilis manifest in the first few weeks of life, and are the consequence of transplacental transfer of organisms. As such they can be thougth of as the equivalent to secondary syphilis in an adult, and include the following:
- nasal discharge
- skin and mucous membrane lesions - erythematous lesions followed by desquamation
- hepatosplenomegally
- failure to thrive
- renal symptoms include nephritis and nephrotic syndrome
