Indications include:
- infections due to:
- brucella
- chlamydia
- mycoplasma
- rickettsia
- exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
- acne vulgaris - reserved "for those patients who do not improve with one of the first line drugs" (BMJ editorial)
- pleural effusions due to cirrhosis or malignancy
- meningococcal carrier state
