treatment

The presence of MAI does shorten survival in patients suffering from AIDS and as such should be treated. It is however resistant to all first-line anti-tuberculous drugs and is difficult to treat.

The following antibiotics have been used in MAI:

  • azithromycin 500 mg b.d.
  • clarithromycin 0.5-1.0 g b.d.

Treatment may reduce systemic symptoms though response is generally poor and is unlikely to produce any improvement in diarrhoea.

Check with local microbiological guidance for antibiotic regime to be used in MAI
